Canadian Tate McRae Announced as Global Apple Music Up Next Artist

Apple Music today announced Canadian singer-songwriter and dancer Tate McRae as the latest addition to its Up Next program, Apple Music's monthly artist initiative geared towards identifying, showcasing and elevating rising talent.

A true musical multi-hyphenate, McRae has seen breakthrough success across the stage, television, YouTube and the recording studio. After finishing as a finalist on the 13th season of So You Think You Can Dance, McRae created her own video series, Create With Tate. "I locked myself in my room for 20 minutes and I wrote a song," she says. That song, “one day," went viral in 2017 when McRae was just 14 and caught the attention of music labels, and in early 2020, McRae embarked on a sold-out tour before being shut down by the pandemic. But that didn't slow the singer-songwriter down—she released her biggest single yet during isolation, the ballad "you broke me first." Across Apple Music, McRae has been playlisted across Today’s Hits, A-List Pop and In My Room with her emotionally honest songs and has amassed over 225 million streams across Apple Music worldwide to date.

“This is crazy that I am a part of Apple’s Up Next program!” said Tate McRae. “It’s been so cool creating all this amazing content for the campaign and I’m so excited for everyone to see another little piece of me in the documentary. I am so thankful to Apple Music for this honor and allowing me to use their massive platform to help share my music with my fans.”

“Tate McRae is an artist in every sense of the word,” said Apple Music 1 host Travis Mills. “Her vulnerable and relatable lyrics in every one of her songs allows fans to feel connected to the world that Tate has created, all in a short amount of time. Her voice sounds nostalgic yet her songs feel modern. She is making music by her own rules and it is exciting to watch her transform her honesty into art.”

In her Up Next film out today, McRae recalls her childhood focused on competitive dancing and her driving ambition to constantly create. “Being in a realm of like constantly comparing yourself and working on yourself and not being good enough,” she says. “You have so many things that go through your brain. You know, sometimes you feel so trapped in your own head. And like writing was the only way that I told anyone, anything. You know, music was the only way that I could really like speak.”

Additional Up Next campaign moments include a Jimmy Kimmel Live! performance on March 30 and a sit down interview with Apple Music’s Mills, where she talks about her modern heartbreak anthems, how she uses social media as her outlet to share her work, and coping with anxiety.
